Performance Art – Haircut

This was a performance art piece I did for an assignment with the objective of creating a spectacle. I did this in Pioneer Square in Portland, right across from the Nordstrom. I didn’t get it all shaved off but since I only had a beard trimmer I think I got pretty far. EDIT 12/20/07: Wow I’ve had a lot of attention from this piece. I thought I would supply a bit more information since I’ve had a lot of questions come in about it. To clarify the project, this was an assignment for an …

All people realize that hair grows back, but only about half an inch per month. One’s image defines at least a part of who we are. It’s in our nature.

i really like this one. I watched it about a year ago and now seeing it again puts a smile on my face.

Another exciting haircut performance i once saw was two people blindfolded in the middle of a room, surrounded by people watching nervously as the couple cut one another’s hair. They did a tidy job of it as well.

You having to shave your hair as art and the slightly obese lady riding her bicycle no one could have scripted a more succulent dripping better piece of irony better than this. Thanks for the insight and the laughs into what mankind has in store for slightly off individuals. Thanks again.

why don’t you take a class like this and see what you come up with…which is what I’m trying to do RIGHT NOW

    ART? I DON’T THINK SO…

Hi! This is a great performance! I’m very interested in performance art and this piece seems to me very different from others. The fact that you don’t say it’s a performance makes it very courageous, because you don’t protect your act behind a reason: you just stand there, do your show.
Thank you fost posting this and I hope you still do performances. :)

I mean, isn’t it performing an act in some way that sets it aside from every day life, so that others can critically examine it instead of passing it by? In which case, I would argue that this is performance art.

This is wonderful…cut off all the hair to get to what is real. Isn’t time we all started looking inward? I love the reactions from people…they honestly don’t know what to do or think.

some people realize that hair grows back, and don’t need it to define who they are

  11. happeningfish77 says:

Why, when asked whether you were an artist, did you reply “no”?

  12. malvavisco10 says:

How did you decide you were ok with cutting your hair off? I would never have done that just for some assignmet. Although way to go for being so brave. Was the camera hidden?

  13. toofargone06 says:

    This is awesome.

What kind of camera did you use?

  14. MisterMisanthropy says:

but that’s why it is performance art? haven’t you ever heard of non-representational art? same thing. It’s art for the sake of art. what is performance art? give me a concrete definition. once you can give me a definition that 2/3 people can have a concensus on then I’ll accept that definition.

i like how everyone just stops to stare. i hate people like that. like when you are stopped at a stop light and you look over and the person in the next car is just staring at you

  16. gilslittleheathen says:

That was very brave of you. :)

  17. joplinbaby says:

    that’s not performance art, sorry!
    there’s no message or mission.
this is just an episode, like you said, of the most uncomfortable thing u could do in public.

  18. anaalvarado7 says:

You did something you were not comfortable with, and I think we got to give you props for that…I can’t imagine myself doing it…I’m also in a class where we have to do some performances/installations and 3D’s and I’m thinking of doing something very soon…anyways, I liked it =)

  19. treewhore says:

a spectacle for spectacle’s sake, this was the assignment? if so, your teacher has no more imagination than you. i understand the importance of placing yourself in the public eye, IF for whatever reason you actually want to make a career that way. but why do you want that? what is the point of a spectacle that only feeds an ego on such a base level?
“look at me,” the work says.
and when your public asks why,
    you answer, “just for fun.”
    that is boring.

You say it like you know what ART is. Dictionary definitions can be found here:

My favourite is “8. the craft or trade using these principles or methods” Because it sums up The Old Masters.

  21. JustMissJac says:

Seriously? Are the old masters the only kind of art you CAN swallow?

Art is more than a canvas.

  22. Bussipysakillah says:

    Great work!

  23. blackcorn666 says:

“Art” is more than painting… If you don’t know this basic, so you can not tell us anything about “art”.

  24. danieltcalder says:

nice piece. the best thing about it is that you did it.

  25. baretul says:

This isnt art??? Seriously? Are people so stupid that they swallow everything?

Look at old masters. Or the contemporary classical painters. That is true beauty. This is nothing!
